Chill out—that’s what we tell ourselves sometimes. Especially when the same thought is on repeat. As much as we would like to “chill out,” it’s easier said than done.
“Obsessive thinking is a series of thoughts that typically recur, often paired with negative judgements. Many times there is an inability to control these persistent, distressing thoughts and the severity can range from mild but annoying, to all-encompassing and debilitating.”
It’s normal to experience obsessive thinking. It’s a beast that many of us are trying to tame. We might try to avoid or escape obsessive thoughts, but this can often amplify them leaving us even more frustrated. So, how can we do to control obsessive thinking? Renee Fabian at @Talkspace has a few tips:
1. Understand what obsessive thinking is
2. Recognize the pattern and name them
3. Accept that thoughts are largely out of your control
4. Explore meditation and mindfulness benefits
5. Reach out to a professional if needed
